Similar Breeds

The Whippet breed itself was known as the “poachers dog” because of its ability to chase fast prey, due to its powerful capabilities as one of the fastest dogs it was no surprise it was introduced into the racing world. Nowadays the Whippet is more commonly known for its unique nature, friendly personality and sleek look. Becoming a more frequently used therapy dog because of these traits and their obedience makes them a loving dog help look after you.

Today  we are going to advise you on some other breeds of dogs that are similar to the Whippet, as maybe you are looking for something slightly different but with the some of the same features and mindset of the Whippet.

Top Choices Of Alternative Breeds:

They are also one of the oldest breeds of dog known to man, originally from Great Britain, this dogs usually weigh in between 60-70 pounds and live an average of 10-13 years.
• Afghan Hound – maybe not overly similar due to its coat but this glamorous breed is a great show dog and born hunter, with the same frame and mentality as a Whippet this really is that something different. The Afghan Hound weighs in similarly to a Whippet at 50-60 pounds and a lifespan of 12-18 years.
• Borzoi – the Russian equivalent to the Whippet, this dog is quick. Bred strictly for its endurance and speed these dogs can run, they are very athletic, gracefully and elegant. • Rhodesian Ridgeback – also known as the “African Lion Dog” this breed has a stamina unmeasurable to other dogs, known for keeping lions at bay in the African plains this dog is perfect for athletes that go out for runs every day. As with a dog that can run at he the same pace as a horse it does require its exercise. Average weigh-in is 70-85 pounds and an average lifespan of 10-12 years.
• Salukis – Originally from the Middle East and buried with some of the oldest members of Egyptian royalty this dog was desirable for the wealthy in the ancient times. Obviously there are still other breeds of dog similar to the Whippet but personally, this is my top 5 favorite they work both as loving family pets and have the build and mental capabilities of a fast running working dog. Please remember to always take care when choosing to bring a dog into your life as it is a big commitment, especially if you are looking at these breed types as they love to get out the house and run free and if you can’t offer that maybe look at a different type.

Whippet Temperament

The whippet temperament and identity were shaped with actual reproductive grounds. Whippets, despite their tribal roots, did not have to go in such a way as big hounds, nor were they expected to live outside the scenario and become an investigation dog. The Whippet can put the rabbit into the pan with the game for a good weekend break to express his thanks, but in any case lived under an unknown roof from his master to make up the stove, eat food and shreds from the kitchen table family.

At the end of the week, the stunning wheels at the beginning of the jump did not look at the bait as they do today, but they kept running at every speed they had on the Ace route that could wear a fabric. Ace dedicated to making a more fruitful cord! Because of these starting points, Whippets are a dog’s dog and an indoor dog, with high and cruel wolves, and they have been finalized by their master or their conceptual wife. They are also the best pot and dish lickers!

Whippet is a good friend, a volunteer who can have a sense of humor. This parent does not work harder and inadequate or difficult. You are sensitive dogs to pay attention to, but with the order of order and preparation have taken place in your situation. Surgery is a way to prepare a dog with great joy. They are big and young, but not for hard and tumble. This dog is anything but it’s heavy on the move and makes traveling partners.
At home, Whippets is a quiet and discreet dog, spending most of their day thinking about a sofa, in the form of a box, or on one of the best corner beds known to Whippet owners. They are largely not powerful with different animals and are favorable to visitors. They are not disappointed, so it’s better with young people, as the kids have and tender with them. Instead of screaming or screaming, many obstacles were hit by children who are also physically or physically, and who often seek a place of concealment.

They can break out when they arrive, and many, because of their credible and uncertainties should not be fashionable. Every new experience is treated with many whippets as an opportunity to find a new friend. Outside of this, especially when they are in the song, they express their ability to extraordinary games and search for their “quarry” (regardless of the artificial bait) and the base of the lions. Seeing these dogs for a perfect walk is cooling! Most Whippet owners who choose to run or beat their blows will be thrilled to see their equality in finding tennis balls and flying circles.
Whippet is also a wonderful dog and family. It gives you the opportunity to represent your hunting attraction and to ensure that it is not dangerous for cats and wildlife in your neighborhood. And in addition, bonds made for pet interactions, a large number of restricted restrictions that can be regained every year, so if you choose the underwear to be a good organ for you, there are many opportunities to get!

Common Health Problems

Even though the average, well-looked-after whippet doesn’t get sick often, you can minimize these incidences by taking good care of your furry friend. Just like all other small dog breeds – whippets are known to be great at hiding pain. As a dog owner, you’re tasked with checking him regularly. This raises one issue – you need to know what to look out for first. Here are four health problems common to whippets. And they often go unnoticed.

1. Vomiting
Who said that nausea is only for humans? It hits dogs hard too. Till today, we’ve never understood why whippets go back and lick their vomit but this works against them. We may fail to notice that they’re not feeling well. The typical dog eats grass after getting stomach upsets in an attempt to induce vomiting. There’s no cause for alarm when you see him vomiting once or twice. Call the vet whenever you notice blood in the vomit. Again, seek professional help when you notice that this vomit is accompanied by diarrhea.

2. Diarrhea As we all know, dogs will eat just about anything – whether it moves or doesn’t. Perhaps this why they’re often hit hard by diarrhea. Just like vomiting, diarrhea should subside in a day (or a maximum of two). Visit the pet when it extends to the third day. Whippets are naturally curious and they spend most of their time scavenging. When you notice that he has diarrhea and isn’t as energetic as he normally is, this may be due to bacterial infection or gut disorders. There are a few studies suggesting that diarrhea in dogs may be linked to cancer but these studies are still in their infancy. We cannot draw conclusive results. PRO TIP: Give your dog white rice and boiled chicken breast for faster recovery from diarrhea.

3. Fleas
As a pet owner, you have two jobs feeding him and keeping him itch-free. Preventing flea attacks falls into the latter category. Eradicating fleas is an uphill task, I won’t lie. Save yourself the hassle and prevent them. Don’t you know that it’s easier to prevent something than to cure it? Flea prevention is a lot easier. (You’re actually doing it without knowing). You’re good to go as long as you keep the grass in your yard short and you. How will they get to your dog if they’re not in your yard? Think about it.

What are the unique features of a whippet?

Thinking of getting a whippet? They say that they have a friendly personality yet they show great enthusiasm when it comes to sporting. You will see the same dog become the perfect couch potato – spending countless hours under the blankets yet still show unapparelled athleticism when in the yard. They love games and won’t hesitate to show short bursts of energy if need be. Here are four unique features of whippets.

1. They’re never aggressive
Whippets are great pets for families with young kids. As household pets, they’re sweet, gentle and docile. They love to snuggle up in cosy mats and chairs and are playful around kids. Generally speaking, they are quiet pets and rarely bark at neighbours or become overly excited whenever you’re hosting guests. They’re different outdoors altogether. They come to life as soon as they step on the ground. You will notice the mood shift. They never change their disposition to the master (or other people) but won’t think twice about chasing a squirrel. They hunt anything.

2. They hate cats
They were naturally bred for hunting and racing. Perhaps this explains why their hunting instincts kick in when they see cats. They have a high prey affinity. Even though they’re great household pets and loyal to their masters, they’re never friendly to cats. They have a competitive spirit and will never hesitate to engage cats in fights and chases. Since time immemorial, they have been known to chase small household pets such as guinea pigs and rabbits. Perhaps you should consider this before bringing one to your home.

3. Love Racing
Biologically speaking, Whippets are miniature Italian greyhounds. the Layman will often confuse these two breeds and it’s forgivable. They have a slender body that signifies speed, enthusiasm and balance. They’re a versatile breed and will clock 35 mph when chasing mechanical lures. Just like all other sighthounds, they’re impressively fast. They specialize in chasing down prey (or bait) and will never give up.
When hunting, they ensure that the prey is within their line of sight at all times – keeping their eyes glazed on the prize. They have a large chest that hosts an incredibly strong heart and large lungs. This is how they manage to run so fast. They’re able to achieve large strides due to their long legs

4. Mischievous
Even though they’re calm and undemanding, they’re never shy of showing their mischievous side. They often insist on enjoying the luxury of furniture. They’ll never lie on a rag as long as there’s a cosy couch nearby. They won’t hesitate to jump on the kitchen counter either. When young, they love to tear up everything in sight. I’ve seen whippet puppies tearing up sofa cushions to make them comfortable countless times. These puppies are very naughty (and playful). Don’t leave them unattended in your living room lest you come home to a nasty surprise.

However, they’re more delicate around children than they appear. They gentle when playing with children. You can leave them unattended and still have peace of mind. We’re not implying that they’re a replacement to the bedsitter though.

About Whippets

A Whippet is a medium-sized dog that belongs to the group of sight dogs. They have short hair and look like greyhounds. It is the fastest domesticated creature of the same weight that often travels as fast as 35 miles per hour.

History of the Whippet breed.
The whippet is a valuable member of the sighthound family of dogs (or hound).
The Whippet race was originally bred to use its sight to hunt and chase the game at high speeds. During the 19th century, the Whippet appeared for the first time in the northern section of England. These dogs come from two different types of greyhounds that mix with small terriers to produce a bloodhound fast enough to go after little games like rabbits.

The Whippets were owned by ordinary workers. These Whippets became the poor man’s racehorse in fact because they would compete with them. They would make them run on the roads or cross the fields for about 200 meters.
The AKC recognized the breed in 1888 and is in the Hound Group. The English Kennel Club did not recognize the breed until 1891. Today, the Whippet is extremely popular at dog shows and has won many championships in several sections.

Temperament for the breed
Whippets are soft dogs that are very affectionate, and enjoy receiving and giving love. The breed is calm and sweet and very rarely even barks. They will bark when they need it, but they are not good watchdogs. They may get irritable at times, so they are not recommended for their children. However, they are friendly enough to be used around the elderly in nursing homes.

If they are not raised around cats, they will be persecuted. The male and female Whippets are equally easy to break. They are very loyal to their owners and love being with them. They will stay close when they can. Whippets are quiet enough for even apartments.

Health problems for the caste
This breed is extremely healthy compared to other breeds. With the right care and nutrition, dogs can live to 15 years with very few health problems. The second main reason for death is heart disease with Whippets. Sometimes, a genetic problem of the eyes may appear in this breed, but this does not happen so often. Undescended testes are a problem that Whippets can commonly have.

Toilet requirements for the breed
The Whippets are quite low maintenance with their short and straight hair. They shed twice a year autumn and spring. Brushing once or twice a week will relieve the detachment. However, this will be good for the dog throughout the year. To add a little more shine to the coat, use a chamois leather and rub it. Just bathe the Whippets when necessary, of course, followed by brushing and maybe a conditioner.
Your nails need trimming to prevent excessive growth. The ears should be checked to see if they need cleaning on the outside. Brush your teeth periodically. Also examine the skin to make sure there are no skin problems.
